The 10th day of Muharram is known as Ashura.
Ashura is 10th in Arabic.

And prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to fast on this day.
it's sunnah for a Muslim to fast on that day.
"the term Sunnah refers to those actions of the Prophet (pbuh), which the Prophet (pbuh) initiated, performed and promoted among ALL his followers, as a part of God’s religion."

Below are few authentic narrations that prove that our prophet used to fast on the day of ashura.

The fast of Ashura

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: When the Prophet (ﷺ) arrived at Medina, the Jews were observing the fast on 'Ashura' (10th of Muharram) and they said, "This is the day when Moses became victorious over Pharaoh," On that, the Prophet (ﷺ) said to his companions, "You (Muslims) have more right to celebrate Moses' victory than they have, so observe the fast on this day."
[Sahih al-Bukhari 4680]

Abu Qatadah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked about observing As-Saum (the fast) on the tenth day of Muharram, and he replied, "It is an expiation for the sins of the preceding year."
