It's becoz to provide more pressure to the surface on which it is hammered.You have studied about pressure right?
Pressure = Force/Area
So since pointed shapes have very less area and since the pressure is inversely proportional to area, more pressure is produced by such surface thus helping the nails to pierce into the surface.
