Why do neurotransmitters have to be removed from the receptors?

As long as the neurotransmitter (purple) is around in the synaptic cleft, it can bind to receptors and affect the postsynaptic neuron. So at some point the drifting neurotransmitters need to be "turned off," or removed, so that the nervous system can engage in other behaviors.....
