I think the spermshave a tail because the tail helps the sperm to move in the female uterus for fusion...

The gametes are reproductive cells. Male gamete called the sperm, is small and mobile. Female gamete called ova or egg. Egg is not mobile. The sperm has a long tail like structure called flagellum, that helps to move towards the ova and merge in it for formation of diploid cells. That is the fertilization during reproduction activity.
