Why do organisms have different life spans?

The connection to body size makes sense; small animals are likely to be eaten by predators so there isn't much of an evolutionary advantage to developing a long life span. The ability to fly probably makes it easier for bats and birds to escape predators so these species may benefit from evolving a long life span.
