When we walk on a carpet floor, the amplitude of vibrations of the floor is reduced and the sound of our steps becomes feeble.

Carpets are soft and as we know soft materials are bad conducted of sound. Thus the carpet tends to absorb the sound produced thus we are not able to hear any sound. Also when we walk on the carpet the amplitude and the vibrations of the floor is reduced leading to a lesser sound.
