ANSWER:

p waves travel at a reduced velocity beyond the depth of 2900 km in the earth's interior because of change in the composition of different zones inside the earth.

EXPLANATION:

p waves travel in a curved path in the interior of the earth. They are recorded along the surface of the earth upto a distance of 11,000 km from the focus of the earthquake.

As the depth increases, the velocity of the wave decreases. This process continues only till a "depth of 2,900 km". Beyond this depth, p wave travel with reduced velocity.

This is because earth behaves like liquids upto a depth of 2,900 km while mantle behaves like solids.
