In technical term we can say that they try to increase their area, as when they are falling down their legs tend to touch the group which can give an impactive force. Therefore by increasing their area by rolling down they can neutral the affect or lower the effect of the force acting on them while landing.

If paratroopers do not roll on landing, there will be a huge change in momentum f their body in a very short time. As a result of this a very high force will act on their leg resulting in breaking of legs and other severe injuries. They roll in order to reduce the impact on their legs.

HOPE IT HELPS
