Because the bus is moving in a straight line the passengers also move with same speed in a straight line but when the bus take a sharp u turn

Why passengers tend to fall sideways when a bus takes a sharp - U turn.

Concept:

First of all, we need to know the concept of Inertia of Direction.

Whenever the bus takes a sharp turn, the property of Inertia produces a pseudo-force in the direction opposite to the direction of turning of the bus.

Please refer to the attached photo to understand better.

Let's take an example :

Passengers are travelling in a bus which is moving in a straight road. So, the passengers are having motion only in the direction of the moving of bus.

Now, if the bus takes a sudden turn, the lower part of the body which is in contact with the bus turns in the direction of the bus. But the upper part of the body which is not in contact with the bus doesn't turn . Hence it appears that the passengers are falling to the opposite direction
