Why do patients have to swallow a barium meal before there digestivesystem is X-rayed ?

on radiographs the substance which absorbs x-ray appears as radiopaque or white..
digestive system is formed by soft tissue and it doesn't contains any hard tissue which can't be visible on radiographs
so a radiopaque material such as barium is used to visiualize digestive system
