why do people carry oxygen cylinder with them during climbing mountains and diving into sea?

it is simple
Mountaineers.. specifically those who climb very high peaks, carry oxygen because their is less oxygen in the air to breath at high altitudes. Oxygen is heaviest major element in our atmosphere of which we depend on to breath. Consequently most of the oxygen in the atmosphere sinks closer to the earth surface. Thus when at high altitude there is less available to breath.
Deep sea divers, different story altogether. For obvious reasons, unless you’re a fish you likely need air to breath. Scuba divers do not take cylinders of oxygen. When you see a scuba diver with a cylinder on his back.. that’s just compressed AIR..21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen. When air is under pressure as would be true for a deep sea diver, the problem is sort of reversed from the high altitude problem. Under pressure, your body absorbs certain gasses more than others, and this creates problems. With standard air.. at a certain depth the body starts taking on a lot of Nitrogen, which leads to a diver suffering from too much nitrogen.. Nitrogen Narcosis. To offset that some special gas mixes have extra Oxygen or other Gases.. but they are never pure oxygen, because pure oxygen under pressure would result in oxygen toxicity.
