Why do people consider eclipse as the formation of evil power??

as we already know that India was advanced in ancient times. I believe that the sages had already known the side effects of eclipse such as skin cancer, eyes might damage,etc. and in order to protect people from this they spread the rumour that it is the formation of evil powers and thus you must not venture out.
