I get very excited about sports, and it’s very interesting as to why competitive sports resonate with some and not others. I think there’s far more to it than unpredictability though. I think there’s some overlap with how exciting a street fight is to watch. Watching someone struggle competitively resonates with the caveman in us all, we’ve evolved to respect appreciate and covet athleticism, for the obvious evolutionary benefits. The roar of the crowd at a football game probably isn’t so different than the roar in a Roman Gladiator stadium. I know watching sports, both team sports and individual sports always makes me think of how I’d do in that situation, similarly to a street fight. UFC is my favorite to watch, the excitement watching that is insane compared to team sports even.
I think our brains still have a lot of caveman aggression and savage instincts buried in there.
I also think that’s a huge part of why sports fans are prodiminately men, and the more physical and savage the sport is, the more the scales tip towards a male fan base. Not that there aren’t many female fans and athletes, but no one can deny the ratio is heavy on the male side
