Because our media promotes these stuff. Consumerism is the trend these days. People are urged to buy things through catchy slogans and nice TV advertisments. People are made to think that wearing fashionable things makes them more attractive and beautiful. People with no fashion sense are said to be ugly and poor. The notion has been embedded in our mind that one must look beautiful physically to be a part of the society. So to be a accepted people run after fashionable clothes, make up and accessories. They spend huge amounts of money on things that are actually not that important. The sad part is that famous personalities that people look up to as role models also promote these stuff. So there is no escaping it.
