Why is traditional food served on a banana leaf in the states of South India? Is it only because there is wide availability of these leaves in these states, or do historic/religious reasons also apply?

Though the Question is directed towards South India and has been answered in great detail by many.
I would like to point out that even in North India we traditionally had the "Pattal Leaf plates" which were made out of "Sal or Banyan Tree leaves".
As it is natural so it is environment friendly. The Pattal plates are thrown in a pit and get decomposed soon.
You just have to sprinkle water on it to clean it so there is minimum fuss.
If you smell the Pattal plate it has this distinct smell and the same smell is absorbed by the food which enriches the flavour of the dishes been served on it.
As I have mentioned that the Pattal Plates are made up of Sal or Banyan Leaves and both have medicinal properties. The leaves are used to cure dysentry and diarrhea. It is also helpful curing skin diseases and banyan tree is also used to cure female sterility. Both Sal and Banyan Tree are worshiped and considered holy in the Hindu faith. The Banyan Tree is related to the Trimurti(Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva) and is called the Kalpavriksha. So the Pattal Plates also have a spiritual connection too.
The Pattal Plate can be custom made from small to very large as you only have to attach leaves so it meets the requirements of the food been served.
For keeping liquid food items we use the "Dona". It is sort of a cup made up of the same Banyan or Sal leaves.
Unlike the Buffet System where you get plastic plates which are washed and then re used, the Pattal you get on the other hand is completely new and therefore are extremely hygienic. We know how plastic plates and spoon get washed in a wedding it is like no washing at all.
