Why do people in most of north America and Australia speak English ?

Australia was colonised by the British, meaning that the dominant language very quickly became English.

As a result of a majority of Australians being descended at least at some point from British settlers (free and convict), English is the major language, and the first language of nearly everyone born in Australia.

It’s the same reason that Americans, Canadians (outside Quebec) and New Zealanders speak English.

Indigenous languages never stood a chance, given they were only spoken over a small part of the country (and hence there were many of them), and it didn’t take long before the number of people with British ancestry outnumbered Indigenous Australians.

Note of course: not all Australians speak English, at least not fluently. Many migrants have it as a second language, and many will only speak broken English. Their children however will almost certainly end up with English as a first language (as we see among the large Vietnamese community).
