why do people refuse to change

Refusing to change in most cases, is not a decision but a habit and like all other bad habits, it also develops due to a history. A long and consistent history of rejection, not being able to fit-in, social anxiety, peer pressure, dependency, criticism during early years, expecting a lot from others, self-loathing and inferiority complexes.
Like all other psychological traumas, each of these have to be clearly acknowledged by the sufferer himself and addressed individually under proper professional supervision.
