people take antacids because sometimes indigestion takes place (excess secretion of HCl in the stomach) and as HCl is an acid, it is neutralised by an antacid, which is a base, for example Mg(OH)2. there are many more antacids that are used in external and internal problems of acids. the neutralisation relieves from pain.
