The static electricity is created due to the friction of the surfaces of the petrol road tankers and the larger accumulation of the static charges may cause explosion.

Hence, a certain length of metal chain hangs down to the earth for transferring this accumulated static electricity to the ground continuously and thus helps in averting such accident.
