because it is very reactive and can react in presence of air and water

It is stored in water because:

1)It is insoluble in water but soluble in carbon disulphide.

2)It is dangerously reactive in air and catches fire when exposed to air.

So, it is stored in water to prevent its contact with atmospheric oxygen.
