Why do polar bears close their nostrils when they are underwater???

Polar bears can close it's nostrils when under water as it swims so that it can swim under water for a long time. By closing it's nostrils it prevents the water from entering it's lungs. Thus when it closes it's nostrils, no water goes inside. Hope this helps!
