Why do polar bears have thick fur over their body?

Polar bear, as the name specifies, live in polar region. So to provide them heat their thick fur acts like an insulator. This thick fur doesn't allow the inner heat or body heat to escape into the sorrounding as a result keeping them warm in such a low temperature.
