Why do polar covalent compounds conduct electricity

Because there are no free electrons or ions in the water (electrolytes) dissolved covalent compounds can't conduct electricity. Similarly, covalent compounds aren't conductive in pure form either. ... Water is also a covalent compound and is a poor electrical conductor. In contrast, salt (NaCl) is an ionic compound.
