While usual household power has a single “phase” with the alternating current alternating 60 (or 50) times per second. Power transmission lines and industrial power systems use a three-phase system. This is a bit complicated for a short answer here, but the net effect is that the current flowing in a given direction on one of the lines while the return current is flowing split between the two other phase lines. This balance means that all of the generation, transmission and substation equipment is used at high efficiency.
