Why do red blood cells have a short lifespan

Red blood cells have a short lifespan because of the following reasons:-

■Red blood cells are subject to mechanical stress as they flow through the various blood vessels in the body, creating tremendous wear and tear. After about 120 days, the cell membrane ruptures and the red blood cell dies.

■And also RBC's don't have a nucleus or endoplasmic reticulum, but they do have enzymes in the cytoplasm, and can produce ATP from glucose which helps in the transportation and flow in the vessels.
