Why do reptiles that live in water come up on the surface of water after a certain time?​

These reptilian ancestors lost their gills at one point in time, so their descendents could not breathe in water unlike fish or some amphibians. They have to come to the water surface to breath the air as they swim, just like humans and dolphins.
