The western Ghats have a very high relief. The mean relief is about 1500m. But in comparison the Eastern Ghats have a relief of about 500-600m. Thus the rivers, get obstructed in the West and flow to Bay of Bengal in east. Thus only long rivers like Narmada and Tapi flow in west to Arabian Sea. But it must be noted, Godavari the longest peninsular river flows eastwards.
