Answer:

Pure water is ionised to a meagre amount. Only one in 10 million molecules of water is ionises .

We know We of pure water is 10^-14. H2O=====> H+ + OH-

So the concentration of the H+ ion in pure water is 10^-7 moles/Lit

Since it is not ionised well it doesn't conduct electricity.

So during the Electrolysis of water a small amount of acid is added to facilitate the CONDUCTANCE of water, to get H2 gas and O2 gas at the cathode and anode respectively. In the same way when an acid or base or salt is added, they facilitate the Ionisation water and leading to better conductance.

NaCl====> Na+ Cl-

NaOH====> Na+ OH-

HCl====> H+ +Cl-

These electrlolytes when added to water increase the CONDUCTANCE or water.
