Water is formless, colourless. It does'nt have it's own colour. The sea water looks blue in colour due to the reflection of the sky. The blue in colour of sea water is also due to the some special types of bacteria such as blue-green algae.

Answer:

When sunlight hits the surface of water , some of the light gets reflected back, whereas, most of the longer wavelengths such as red, orange and yellow penetrate sea water and get absorbed by the water molecules. So only the shorter wavelengths of light which contain violet and blue colors are reflected back to reach our eyes. Hence water appears blue.
