Why do ships float while an iron nail sinks in water?

ship has more volume than iron nail and therefore it floats whereas nail sinks

the ship have lesser density than water where as nails have more density then water ...... or it is due to a upward force known as buoyancy ........in simple words we can also said that the ship contains air in it but the nail don't....
