solid expand on heating because particles of matter loose there original configuration due to thermal energy provided in the form of heating radiation and expand due to vibrational motion of particles in a series. but there are some exceptional property of solid like regalation .

Due to increase in Kinetic energy
Explanation:
- If a substance is heated its atoms and molecules vibrate faster and their kinetic energy increases. As the atoms vibrates faster the space between the atom increases. Due to this the atoms and molecules take up more space and causes increase in size in solids.
- Solid liquid and gas all expand on heating. When the substance gets cooler(heat leaves the substance) the atomic and molecular vibration vibration slows down, it leads to decrease in kinetic energy and hence atoms take less space.
