Why do solids have a fixed shape but gases neither have a fixed shape nor a fixed volume.

Explanation:

The reason hides with the forces called intermolecular forces, that act between the particles and keep them joined or bounded together.

These forces are very strong in case of particles of solids, due to which the particles can jiggle or vibrate but don't move from their fixed place easily, hence the shape of solid is fixed.

in case of gases, intermolecular forces are v. weak, the particles are separated by great distance and can vibrate and move freely from their original place, hence the shape isn't fixed.

The volume is changed because gases can be compressed largely due to the free space between particles mentioned above.

Answer:

In solids the atoms are tightly packed, thus they have fixed shaped and volume. And in the case of gas the atoms are situated much far away thus they don't have fixed shape nor fixed volume, and this is why they fill completely the container in which they are stored.
