Like charges repel, so the positive alpha particles were being repelled by positive charges. The very small number of alpha particles coming straight back suggested that the positive charge and mass are concentrated in a tiny volume in the atom (the nucleus).

Explanation:the atom has small positively charged nucleus.all the charges and entire mass of the atom concentrateed in the nucleus.the alpha paricles are positively charge.thrfore it get repelled by the nucleus.so the alpha particles are reflected back.the no. Of alpha particle reflected back is very few .the reason is the size of the nucleus is very small when compared to the size of the atom.
