It takes a great amount of body resources to produce eggs. In nature it is best to produce as many as possible at one time to ensure the survival of the reproduction result. Most insects die afterwords. The care and feeding of fowl takes many weeks and the survival of the young is very low. If there are several eggs in the clutch the odds are better that one of the hatchlings making it.
