Explanation: Usually when ions are created, we would know the charges for the ions formed from GRP 1 - 7. However for transitional metals the method we use for finding ions do not work. hence to make it easier to understand the metals have roman numericals that show the charges that would be caused by that metal's ions. For example Sulphur dioxide is also called Sulphur(IV) oxide indicating that sulphur forms a ion with a charge of 4.
