Why do some non metal act as oxidising agent

This is because non-metals are likely to gain electrons to become stable. Thus they react with compounds having oxygen and displace oxygen to react with it and to become stable.Their valency is more than 4 thus they can easily react with oxygen and borrow its electrons.
