Answer:

The human ear accepts two separate sound signals at nearly the same time. The original sound, and the reflected sound. The reflected sound is the result of the sound waves bouncing off perimeter surfaces in the room, at a pace of 768 miles per hour, and returning to your ear drum so fast that you cannot tell it’s actually a separate sound signal. This is echo. So the difference between original and reflected sound is nearly impossible to distinguish, to the human ear it all sounds like the same sound signal. When the room stands empty, the reflected sound waves have nothing to absorb the energy and slow it down. When the room stands filled with furnishings, those same reflected sounds begin to be captured and converted from the space. An empty room is unable to convert echoes from the space, while a room filled with furnishings can better control the level of echo. This is why sound panels work so well at controlling excessive exposure to noise.
