I think I've got this figured out now, based on my own experience.
For my first 18 years, I never ever got lost. From the age of three, I constantly wandered off, taking my little red wagon with me, but I always found my way home again. If a big black and white car didn't show up in the meantime to give me a ride back.
(It was years later before I realised that police cars weren't special taxis for kids with sore legs.)
