Why do some pieces of iron behave as magnets?

Some pieces of iron behave as magnets because they were in contact with an actual magnet which gives them a positive and negative charge on the opposite ends of the piece of metal. Also, just from being rasped as in a piece of iron being filed, the filings can stick to the file ie become magnetized.
