Answer: These plants grow in soil that lack the nutrients needed for growth (usually a swampy or boggy area) and so they obtain the necessary nutrients from decomposing insects.

Most of theses plants have an attractant chemical that is either sweet, smells like flowers, smells like decomposing flesh, is sticky or a combination of these.

Pitcher plants, for instance, have a bowl-like “flower” that collects moisture from rain and dew and the insects fall in, drown and decompose. The lining of the bowl has hair-like protuberances that prevent the insect from climbing out.

Others such as the the Venus flytrap have a “flower” that closes when stimulated by the moving insect and so“traps” the insect. (Incidentally, this action is not unique in the plant world in that some plants, like Mimosas also wither or move when touched).
