Why do some plants turn into parasitic plant in nature?

Most parasitic plants need to germinate in close proximity to there host plant because there seeds are limited in the amount of resources necessary to survive without nutrients from their host plant. the range is important because striga asiatica will only grow about 4mm after germination.
