Why do some rocks retain water and other do not?Explain this with the help of a diagram

The rocks which retain water are not porous and donot let water penetrate through them. On the contrary the rocks which donot retain water easily let the water flow through them.

The rock's water retaining capabilities are dependent on it's physical characteristics.

If the rock is porous and made out of the water absorbing materials ,then the rock will surely retain a good amount of water.

And the rock which has smooth and non-porous surface and made out of water repellent materials,then the rock will not retain any kind of water.
