Larger, heavier seeds need correspondingly larger and more elaborate wings to enable them to fly far from their parent plant. Many of the same design elements are seen in airplanes and helicopters. These structures allow the seeds to sail along on the wind, and colonize areas that may be quite distant from the parent.
