Why do splinters of an exploded cracker spread in different directions?(give reason)

The cracker is at rest initially. so the initial momentum of system is zero.
After bursting, crackers splits into splinters.
according to law of conservation of momentum, final momentum of system should be zero.
so splinters will fly in off symmetrically in all direction such that overall momentum is zero.
