Twinkling of stars :

Stars seem to twinkle because we view them through a thick layer of moving air in the Earth's atmosphere.

As light from the stars travels through many layers of earths atmosphere. It is refract ed many times in random directions.

This Random Refraction results in the star twinkling out which our eyes interpret as

1. Twinkling of stars is due to the atmospheric refraction of starlight.

2. The atmosphere bends the starlight towards the normal. The apparent position of star keeps on changing due to the physical condition of the atmosphere.

3. The stars are very distant, they are approximately point sized source of light.

4. As the path of ray of light coming from the star goes on varying slightly, the apparent position of the stars fluctuate and the amount of light entering the eye flickers.
