why do stars appear twinkling

They appear twinkling because of the earth's layers. As soon as the light from them passes each layer and reaches our eyes, the stars appear as to be twinkling.
I know, I'm not clear but I told my best, hope it helped!

 Stars twinkle when we see them from the Earth's surface because we are viewing them through thick layers of moving air in the Earth's atmosphere. AT THEY ARE AT A LARERER  DISTANCE FROM US
