Nuclear fusion powers a star for most of its life. Initially the energy is generated by the fusion of hydrogen atoms at the core of the main-sequence star. Later, as the preponderance of atoms at the core becomes helium, stars like the Sun begin to fuse hydrogen along a spherical shell surrounding the core.

Iakshmikumaresan9041: Why do stars change in their outward properties (L, Ts, R), as they mature as a main sequence stars and then age toward their demise as giant and supergiant stars?
The short answer is that because changes (whether gradual shrinking or contraction) in a star's core where fusion is occuring (or perhaps no longer occuring!) must result in changes throughout the rest of the star, including its surface.
