Why do stars seem to circle the north star?

Planet Earth spins on it's axis (north and south poles) causing the observable Universe, including our Sun, to pan across the sky over a 24 hour period. The North Star is the nearest visible object directly above the North Pole, so it will appear to remain still as the others circle it.
Of course, the stars aren't moving, the Earth is.
