stars are point sources of light and are thousands of lightyears away from us. rays of light passes through various atmospheric layers before reaching our eyes. the difference in density of each layer causes continuous refraction of light rays which sometimes appear brighter and sometimes dimmer. this causes the rays to appear brighter at times and dimmer at other times, which is perceived as the twinkling effect. it also makes us see the position of the star slightly different from its original position.
