Stars twinkle because when the light source enters the earths atmosphere refraction takes place as the atmosphere is bend towards the normal the position of the star is different. Our eyes cannot follow a bended path of light so we see it at a different position. The physical properties of the atmosphere are  not the same every time so we see the star twinkling.

Answer:

The twinkling of a star is due to the atmospheric refraction of star's light. The continuously changing atmosphere refracts the light from the stars by different amounts from one moment to the next. The star light reaching out eyes increases and decreases continuously due to atmospheric refraction. And the star appears to twinkle at night.
